For those of you who were watching Downton Abbey or Girls, Sunday night was also the 70th annual Golden Globe Awards, when the mysterious Hollywood Foreign Press Association hands out accolades to the best films and TV shows from the previous year.
The Golden Globes are often used as a crystal ball to see who will snag a win at the Academy Awards in February. Les Miserables’ Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman, and Silver Linings Playbook’s Jennifer Lawrence all took home Globes, which may bolster their chances at the Oscars. Both Les Miserables and Argo won Best Film, for comedy and drama respectively.
Other winners at the Globes included Christoph Waltz for Best Supporting Actor in Django Unchained, Game Change Best Actress Julianne Moore and Best Supporting Actor Ed Harris, and Claire Danes and Damian Lewis, who both won for Homeland (which also scored Best TV Series, Drama).
Two of our favorite English roses went home winners: Maggie Smith won Best Supporting Actress in a Series and Adele’s title track for the James Bond flick Skyfall won Best Original Song.
The biggest surprise in the fairly perfunctory show was Jodie Foster coming out as a lesbian while accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award. Foster commented that she was nervous, and asked for the audience’s “support,” but made a point to thank ex-girlfriend Cydney Bernard, whom she called “one of the deepest loves of my life.”
